Milano News---Funeral services were held for Mrs. Pearl Smith, who died
Thursday, Dec. 31 at the age of 80 years. Services were held Jan. 1,
1965, from Phillips and Luckey Chapel in Rockdale at 2 P.M. with Reverend
Richard Sparks officiating. Burial was in the Milano Cemetery. The
daughter of the late William Henry and Mary Jane McGregor, and a lifelong
resident of Milano.
Survivors include her husband, Alfred Smith daughters, Annie Mae Smith
and Gussie Brown of Milano; 3 sons, Jess Smith of Milano, Herman Smith of
Milano, and Roy Smith of San Angelo brothers, Asa McGregor and Basil
McGregor of Milano; and 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Basil McGregor became a very active community member in Milano, Texas. He
tried to preserve the history of Milano, Texas by publishing a book
titled: Milano, Texas A History by Basil McGregor 1873 - 1965. He made
every effort to list community members in his book. He gives information
about local shops during this time period, the owners and who may have
worked in the shops. He has information about community groups, and
their members. He has alot of information about the local schools and
who were teaching during that time period.
Basil McGregor also published a book about the McGregor family history
and distributed this information among family members. Some of the
information contained in this family history, was from Basil McGregor.
Basil McGregor became manager of the Milano Lumber Yard in 1915. Later
he managed the William P. Carey Lumber Yard.
Basil belonged to Brotherhood of American Yoamen Lodge.
Basil, wife Amy, children James and Martin are listed as some of the
first settlers of Milano, Texas.

He came to Texas with his father in 1881. They first settled in Cook
County, Texas near Gainsville. Later they moved to Rockdale, Texas then
to Milano, Texas, where his father purchased a farm. He lived here until
his marriage to Annie. They lived in the Summitt Community, this being
on Milano. F.F.D. No. 3. here he was engaged in farming with his
father-in law Tome Hurt. Later the family moved to Lexington, Texas
where he was a Rawleigh dealer. Later the family moved to Houston,
Texas, where he lived until his death. A clipping from the Houston
Chronicle says his funeral was with Fogel-West Funeral Home and he was
buried in Forest park Cemetery with Rev. Baldridge Stevens in charge of
services. The clipping is not dated.
George H. McGregor, wife Annie, children Susie, John and Milton are
listed as first settlers of Lone Pine Community.
