Two Indians crept out from the woods and fired at John and tow bullets passed entirely through his body. one of them rushed forward to scalp him whild the other attempted to reach Nancy. Neither carried a loaded gun. Nance was a stout resolute woman with the courage that characterized many of her sex in pioneer days. With a heavy hoe that she had been using she stuck the Indina on the head as he was climbing the fence, and he dropped to the ground; with a few more blows she ended his life. Edward, their oldest son, rushed out at that moment and the remaining Indian fled, John Carpenter soon recovered."
